September’s Rush, October’s Opportunity

Every March and September brings a new plate change, the ideal time to refresh company vehicles.

September always seems to creep up on us, doesn’t it? One minute we’re juggling the school summer holidays keeping the kids entertained, squeezing in last-minute getaways, and trying to keep work ticking over and the next, the new term starts, the roads are busier, and suddenly it feels like everything ramps up at once.

For those of us in the motoring world, September brings something else too: the launch of the new registration plate. This year, the 75-plate arrived on 1st September, sparking the usual flurry of excitement around new cars.

Leasing is often the go-to choice for businesses at this time of year. It offers a straightforward way to upgrade to the latest models without worrying about depreciation or tying up cash in big upfront costs. At SMC, we saw plenty of activity in the run-up to September, with fleets being refreshed across the board from minibuses and commercial vans to everyday cars for teams on the move. SUVs and estates remain favourites for their practicality, while plug-in hybrids and EVs are proving increasingly popular as businesses look for both greener choices and long-term savings.

If September felt hectic for you (we get it, it did for us too!), October could be the sweet spot. Once the rush has eased, there are often opportunities to take advantage of any remaining 75-plate stock. It’s also the perfect time to think ahead: with manufacturer lead times still varying, placing orders early means you get the vehicles you want, when you want them, without last-minute compromises.

So, as the school run routine settles back in and the roads find their new rhythm, October is a great moment to take stock, review your fleet needs, and plan ahead with confidence.
