9th January 2012 - Changes to the Low Emission Zone in London in 2012

If you drive a van, minibus, horsebox, motor-caravan, utility vehicle or pick-up in the Greater London area you could be facing a daily charge of £100 from January 2012.

Your vehicle could be one of the thousands affected by changes to the rules for the London Low Emission Zone that come into force from the beginning of 2012.

The changes could double the number of vehicles affected by the scheme.

* More vehicle types affected – including some likely to be privately owned
* Tighter emissions limits – more vehicles likely to need modification

The London Low Emission Zone was introduced in 2008. The scheme covers most of Greater London and aims to improve air quality by encouraging owners to clean up exhaust emissions on the most polluting large diesel vehicles including buses, lorries and coaches.

Vehicles affected by the scheme must pay a daily charge to enter the low emissions zone unless they meet minimum exhaust emissions standards – based on official European type approval standards for particulate matter(soot).

Days run from midnight to midnight so if you go into the zone at 10pm and comes out at 2am you will be liable for two 'day charges' if your vehicle doesn't meet the required emissions standard.

Newer vehicles will meet the requirements anyway but older ones may need a filter fitted in the exhaust and certified to show compliance with the requirements.

The Low Emission Zone operates 24hrs a day, 365 days a year and is enforced by cameras – vehicle number-plates are matched to vehicle specification data (from DVLA and other sources) together with details of vehicles registered directly with the scheme.

From 3 January 2012:

The emissions standards that vehicles must meet and the types of vehicle affected by the scheme are changing significantly from 3 January 2012. This means that many vehicles that can be used in London at the moment without paying a LEZ daily charge will either have to start paying from 3 January 2012 or will have to be modified, certified and registered with TfL before that date.

Daily charges are very high - between £100 and £200 depending on vehicle type - so it is very important that you find out if you have a vehicle that is, or will be affected by the scheme.

Vehicle types

Vans, minibuses, horseboxes, motorcaravans, utility vehicles and pick-ups will be included in the LEZ scheme from 3 January 2012.

(When the LEZ was introduced in 2008 TfL indicated that these smaller vehicle categories would be brought into the scheme in October 2010. This was later postponed to 2012 to give owners of affected vehicles more time to prepare.)

This is an important change because it brings into scope a number of vehicle types that might be owned and operated privately – the LEZ can no longer be thought of as just a commercial vehicle scheme.

* Light 4x4 utility vehicles (more than 1.205tonnes unladen weight)
* Pick-ups(more than 1.205tonnes unladen weight)
* Vans (more than 1.205tonnes unladen weight)
* Minibuses with more than eight passenger seats
* Motor Homes/Motorised Caravans(more than 2.5 tonnes gross weight)
* Ambulances (more than 2.5 tonnes gross weight)

23rd December 2011 - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from All at Southern Motor Contracts Ltd

22nd December 2011 - Renault cull five models from its UK Range

As of February 2012, Renault will no longer supply the following vehicles, Wind, Modus, Grand Modus, Kangoo passenger car and compact van, Laguna Hatchback, Tourer and Coupe, Espace and Grand Espace. Renault have said that these models represent less than 10% of the sales mix in the UK.

They are also cutting their dealers by up to a third. Later in 2012, Renault will launch the value Dacia brand in all its 135 remaining UK dealers. This will allow the Renault brand to move slightly upmarket, with the Dacia Duster and Sandero slotting in beneath.

Renault will also launch its range of electric cars, including the Zoe supermini – and will replace the Clio, its key model line, towards the end of the year following a Paris Motor Show debut.

The firm hopes its decision to focus on four key products, with an electric car halo range above and a Dacia value line below, will restore both profitability and market share: as recently as 2005, Renault was the top-three car brand in the UK, with sales of almost 190,000 cars and a market share of over seven per cent.

20th December 2011 - New fuel-efficient Audi A4 announced

Following improvements to the A5, Audi has now given its popular A4 executive saloon a makeover including a new look and an ultra-efficient 134bhp 2.0 TDIe model which claims 65.7mpg and emits just 112g/km of CO2.

Audi has fitted stop-start and energy recuperation across the whole A4 engine range resulting in fuel economy improvements of up to 21 per cent. That means the more powerful 160bhp 2.0 TDIe manages 64.2mpg and even the 201bhp 3.0-litre V6 TDI – which replaces the old 2.7-litre TDI – claims 57.6mpg in front-wheel-drive variants.

Most obvious are the changes to the exterior which include changes at the front like a single frame, tapered grille, sharper air-intakes either side of the front bumper, and reshaped LED headlights in the mould of the new A5 and A6.

At the back, the refreshed taillights mirror the sleek new headlights, and all model variants now come with twin-exhausts as standard.

The suspension, specifically the shock absorbers and rear trailing arms, have been fine-tuned to offer better ride comfort than before. S Line models still get a lowered and stiffer ‘Sports’ set-up, which is likely to give a firm ride.

To maintain its reputation for class-leading interiors, the new Audi A4 also gets a simplified, more intuitive MMI infotainment system, stylish chrome and gloss inlays on the steering wheel and door panels, a new flat-bottomed sports steering wheel and a brushed aluminium starter button.

Audi have announced that prices start from £24,000, only a slight price increase over the current model which costs from £22,200. Top-spec 3.0 TDI models fitted with the seven-speed S-Tronic gearbox will cost £34,600. Estate variants will demand a premium of around £1000 over the saloon.

Orders can now be taken for the updated Audi A4, with the first customer deliveries scheduled for March 2012.

13th December 2011 - BMW announce the launch of their first four-door coupé

Following the unveiling of the stunning Concept vehicle at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show, BMW have announced the launch of BMW’s first four-door coupé and a new addition to the 6 Series family, the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé has the proportions of a classic grand tourer coupé – characterised by a long bonnet, a sweeping roofline and a passenger compartment set towards the rear of the car – with the spaciousness and ease of access of an executive saloon.

The Gran Coupé is the most spacious and practical 6 Series ever. This has been made possible by stretching the wheelbase and overall length of the 6 Series Coupé on which it is based by 113mm. The 6 Series Gran Coupé is 5,007mm long, with a wheelbase of 2,968mm. Both SE and M Sport models will be available from launch with a choice of two six-cylinder engine variants, a 320hp petrol (640i) and a 313hp diesel (640d) derivative.

Expected July 2012, the model line-up will be further enhanced to include a 650i with a new 450hp V8 engine. This new engine makes its debut in the 6 Series Gran Coupé and features increased power and performance over the current 50i derivatives whilst benefitting from reduced consumption and emissions. The new engine features a host of standard EfficientDynamics measures, including Auto Start-Stop and ECO PRO mode. Full technical details and standard equipment information for the 650i will be released nearer the time.

9th December 2011 - Audi reveals A1 Sportback

Audi chose the Tokyo motor show to launch the Audi A1 Sportback – a five-door version of the supermini that's due to go on sale early next year.

The car is a little taller and a little wider than the three-door version, which allows for more space in the rear seats, says Audi. The A1 Sportback will come with five seats as standard, although customers can specify a four-seat layout at no extra charge.

From launch, there will be three petrol engines and one diesel. The petrol range comprises a 1.2 TFSI unit and two 1.4 TFSI engines with either 121bhp or 183bhp.

The 104bhp 1.6-litre TDI diesel averages 74.2mpg and emits just 99g/km of carbon dioxide. A 141bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine will join the A1 Sportback range in the summer. Only the higher-powered 1.4 misses out on engine stop-start fuel-saving technology.

The A1 Sportback comes in SE, Sport and S line trims. All models get alloy wheels, remote central locking and electric windows.

A1 Sportback models cost £560 more than the equivalent three-door variant, meaning the entry-level 1.2 SE starts at £13,980. The range-topping 1.4 185 S line starts at £21,270.

7th December 2011 - New Mazda3 Launches February 2012

2nd December 2011 - Peugeot 208 launches in Spring 2012

Peugeot will launch its new model in the "B segment" – small, Supermini. It will be available in two distinct body styles; 3-door and 5-door.

Today, creating a vehicle capable of appealing to and uniting a wide variety of customers with ever changing expectations, simple renewal is no longer enough. Therefore, from the outset, the "A9" Project adopted the most ambitious specification overhaul ever undertaken by the Marque to create a vehicle which represents a true generation leap.

Peugeot has not hesitated to rewrite the rulebook, with the desire to reinvent the principles on which the success of icons like the 205, 206 and 207 were built and to "re-generate" them, to create : The Peugeot 208.

The 208 embodies the principles of agility and efficiency. The initial technical choices make it a vehicle which is light (110 kg lighter on average compared with the 207, and as much as –173 kg with a range which starts at 975 kg), aerodynamic (Cd of 0.29, CdA of 0.61), and very compact (-7 cm in length, -1 cm in height). These benefits are accentuated by noticeably increased occupant space, with more room in the rear seats (+5 cm at the knees) and a more generous boot (+15 dm3 in volume), proof of optimised architectural performance.

The 208 gives form to and refines the new aesthetic codes of the Marque. ‘Floating’ grille, light signature, ‘boomerang’ rear lamps - each detail is designed in complete coherence with the general volume, structured by a "spine" the impression of which is even visible on the roof. Sculpted, athletic, both pure and sophisticated, its style projects the Marque towards a renewed and attractive modernity, suggesting sensuousness and energy, smoothness and mischief. The two body types have been given an entirely different treatment, with a three-door version the quarter panel movement of which calls to mind one of its illustrious older siblings.

11th November 2011 - Preparing for Winter Driving

All company car drivers should be aware of the potential dangers of Winter Driving. Wet or icy roads, poor visibility and travelling in the dark all contribute to accidents. However, there are measures drivers can take to ensure that the risks are minimised.

Ensure all tyres are at the correct inflation levels, they are not worn or have uneven wear.

Check all fluid levels are topped up to the correct levels in between servicing.

Vehicles are serviced in accordance with manufacturers recommendations.

All puncture equipment is present and usable.

Areas of particular attention for Winter driving are -

Engine/cooling system - check antifreeze levels. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze to water will protect the engine down to - 34C.

Handbrake - Check for damage to handbrake cable covering. Cables should be changed if water has penetrated.

Washers and Wipers - A 50/50 mix of additive to water is needed in very cold weather. Switch wipers off when parked in frost. If ice forms on the wipers, doing so prevents damaging blades or overheating the wiper motor when the car is started.

Locks - Oil door and boot locks and spray with water repellent to prevent freezing. Similarly for bonnet and fuel cap.

Diesel - Can become waxy and unusable below - 15 c. Some additives can lower this temperature. If possible, garage your vehicle in extreme cold.

Keep safe this Winter!

2nd November 2011 - BMW 3 Series to Launch in February 2012

The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the world’s best-selling premium car, sets new benchmarks in terms of sporting prowess, elegance and comfort. The pioneering history of the 3 Series serves as inspiration for the new sports sedan, whose powerful styling represents a fresh interpretation and conscientious development of traditional BMW design cues. The new BMW face, with flat headlights reaching along as far as the BMW kidney grille, emphasises the elegantly dynamic design of the new BMW 3 Series. The sixth generation of the 3 Series has grown in size compared to its predecessor, with its wide track (front + 37 mm, rear + 47 mm) particularly prominent, and the car’s increased length (+ 93 mm) and augmented wheelbase (+ 50 mm) also accentuate its sporting silhouette. Inside the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, the noticeable increase in space benefits the rear passengers above all. And the BMW 3 Series range is now also available in a trio of trim and equipment variants – the Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line. Each presents its own individual take on the character of the sports sedan, with exclusive, high-quality material combinations and unbeatable build quality underlining the premium ambience of the new range.

Drive and chassis technology have always been key areas of expertise for the brand, and agility and driving dynamics remain outstanding attributes of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The new car belies its larger dimensions with a kerb weight 40 kilograms (88 lb) below that of its predecessor. In addition to the sports performance typical of the brand, the further enhanced levels of comfort on board the new 3 Series make a significant contribution to driving pleasure.

A choice of four refined, economical and muscular engines – all of which feature new BMW TwinPower Turbo technology – will be available for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan from launch. In addition to two further optimised diesel powerplants and the already successful six-cylinder petrol unit, customers can also enjoy the talents of the new turbocharged four-cylinder variant in the BMW 328i. This latest-generation petrol engine rewards the driver with a dynamic driving experience coupled with reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

BMW is the first carmaker to offer an eight-speed automatic gearbox in the premium mid-size segment. It can be specified in combination with any of the petrol and diesel engines in the range and links up with the Auto Start-Stop function that comes as standard. Compact and exceptionally efficient, it allows the new BMW 3 Series to match or outperform models fitted with the standard six-speed manual gearbox in terms of both fuel economy and emissions. The new eight-speed automatic brings together shift comfort, dynamic performance and efficiency of the highest order, making it the perfect partner for the new sedan’s dynamic potential.

As components of the BMW EfficientDynamics technology line-up, the Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, Optimum Shift Indicator and need-based operation of ancillary components (including a disengageable air conditioning compressor) also play their part in reducing fuel consumption. Added to which, the new Driving Experience Control switch not only offers Comfort, Sport and Sport + options, but also ECO PRO mode, which gives all the models in the range the potential to further improve these figures. This switch helps drivers maximise fuel economy through their driving style, thereby enabling them to increase the distance they can travel between visits to the pumps. The same goes for the CO2-minimising BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition, whose peak output of 120 kW/163 hp contrasts with average fuel consumption in the EU driving cycle of 4.1 l/100 km (68.9 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km. BMW will add further cutting-edge engines to the line-up in 2012, when the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will also celebrate its premiere.

Enhanced superiority, convenience and safety thanks to intelligent connectivity.

BMW ConnectedDrive offers an unmatched combination of driver assistance technology and mobility systems for the new BMW 3 Series range. A new arrival in the premium mid-size segment is the latest-generation full-colour Head-Up Display, which projects key information – in sharp resolution – onto the windscreen so it appears directly in the driver’s field of view. Also available is Surround View with Side View and Top View, which gives a bird’s-eye perspective of the vehicle and the area around it. In addition, a parking assistance system helps the driver to manoeuvre into parking spaces. Among the other assistance technology available under the BMW ConnectedDrive banner are Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, the Lane Change Warning System and Lane Departure Warning System with camera-based Collision Warning system, which are offered for the first time in a BMW 3 Series Sedan. Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI) and special apps such as “BMW Connected” for using social networks are also available. An innovative comfort access function allowing hands-free opening of the boot lid and the additional Active Protection occupant protection system are likewise included on the options list, as is Advanced eCall with automatic position finding from BMW Assist. In the event of an accident, this system gives the emergency services detailed information on the nature of the collision before they arrive at the scene of the accident.

19th September 2011 - Ford has confirmed the first production applications for its smallest-ever EcoBoost engine at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

With only 3 cylinders and 1.0 litre of displacement, the new EcoBoost engine will provide fuel-efficient power for three models in the European product range – first the Focus, followed by C-MAX and the all-new Ford B-MAX.
The new 1.0-litre engine is the latest addition to Ford’s global family of EcoBoost engines, which currently range in capacity from 1.6 to 3.5 litres globally. Downsized EcoBoost engines feature turbocharging, direct injection and other technologies and replace larger engines with no loss of performance and with lower consumption.

Ford will introduce two versions of the 1.0-litre engine in the Focus in Europe in early 2012 with 100PS and 120PS and 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions respectively. Ultimately, this all-new engine will be made available in Ford models in North America, China and in other regions.

“By offering the Focus with an advanced small-displacement petrol engine Ford is not only making a major statement on how serious we are about engine downsizing – it also shows the strength of our development and engineering capabilities. To produce a 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with such impressive performance and fuel economy is a clear example of our commitment to be class-leading in fuel economy,” said Graham Hoare, Executive Director, Powertrain, Ford of Europe.

With its 1.0-litre capacity, the 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine will be the smallest engine currently produced by Ford. Yet, despite its small capacity and proportions, the forward-thinking design delivers power and performance to rival a traditional 1.6-litre petrol engine while emitting less than 120g/km CO2 in the Focus.

24th November 2010 - Preparing for Winter Driving

All company car drivers should be aware of the potential dangers of Winter Driving. Wet or icy roads, poor visibility and travelling in the dark all contribute to accidents. However, there are measures drivers can take to ensure that the risks are minimised.

Ensure all tyres are at the correct inflation levels, they are not worn or have uneven wear.

Check all fluid levels are topped up to the correct levels in between servicing.

Vehicles are serviced in accordance with manufacturers recommendations.

All puncture equipment is present and usable.

Area of particular attention for Winter driving are -

The new Volkswagen Touran compact MPV opens for ordering today complete with fresh styling both inside and out, a range of efficient new engines and a starting price of £17,585 RRP on the road.  First deliveries are set to take place on 22 September.

Unveiled at the Leipzig Motor Show in April, the new Touran draws on the design language seen on the Polo and new Sharan with a mix of clean lines and a lower, wider appearance than the model it replaces.  The changes extend to the front wings, bonnet and front bumper which are joined by new wing mirrors, rear lights and a restyled tailgate and bumper.

Inside the new Touran the entertainment and climate functions have all been revised and a new three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of restyled dials.  Fresh trim finishes are also available.

As with the outgoing car, the new Touran’s focus is on versatility, with the ability to carry seven adults with the third row of seats folding flat into the floor.  In addition, air conditioning, alloy wheels, roof rails, a CD stereo system, ABS, Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) and six airbags are all fitted as standard.  A five-seat option is also available.

The second generation of Park Assist, a system that will also be available on the new Sharan, is offered.  Not only does the new system require less space to perform parallel parking manoeuvres, it also allows the Touran to be parked in spaces at 90 degrees to the kerb.

Fitted for the first time to the Touran is the advanced new 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine. Despite a modest displacement of 1,197 cc, the turbocharged unit develops 105 PS and 129 lbs ft of torque while returning 44.1 mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 149 g/km of CO2.  In BlueMotion Technology form, complete with Stop/Start and battery regeneration, the 1.2-litre TSI engine is capable of returning 47.9 mpg while emitting an estimated 139 g/km of CO2.

Audi will be taking orders on the New Audi A7 Sportback from the 16th August with anticipated deliveries late in the year. The model range sits between the A6 and the A8, offering a big-car interior designed to carry four people with an attractive four-door coupe shape.

The new model will be offered with four V6 engines, all with direct injection, Audi’s thermal management system, stop-start and brake energy recuperation. The petrol units are a 2.8-litre V6 with 201bhp and 207lb ft, and a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 producing 295bhp and 325lb ft. They are available with a seven-speed S-tronic transmission and quattro four-wheel drive only. In 3.0 TFSI form the A7 can reach 62mph in 5.6sec and go on to a limited top speed of 155mph. The 2.8 emits 187g/km of CO2 and the 3.0 190g/km. The line-up will include two V6 diesels. The more potent of the pair comes with four-wheel drive and S-tronic only, and it has 241bhp and 369lb ft of torque giving 0-62mph in 6.5sec and reaching a maximum of 155mph.

For the first time in a production Audi, a 'head-up' display will be available at extra cost in the A7 Sportback. The sophisticated system will project key information, including economy and speed data and navigation routing onto the windscreen so that it appears to float at a distance of around 2.5 metres ahead of the driver.

Another key option that is new to Audi models of this size is the park assist system. Using ultrasonic sensors that detect parallel and horizontal parking spaces, the system can completely take over the steering function when parking at the touch of a button, leaving the driver responsible only for throttle and brake application as required.

The list of optional driver aids will also include a night vision assistant employing a thermal imaging camera to highlight persons in front of the car, the Audi side assist blind spot warning system, the Audi lane assist lane departure detection system and the new Audi pre-sense system first seen in the new A8. In its standard form pre-sense analyzes the information from the ESP sensors and intervenes to activate the hazard warning lights, close the side windows and sunroof and tension the seatbelts when maximum brake application or skidding is detected.

The pre-sense system can be expanded in various stages at extra cost: the full version brakes the car automatically in order to minimize the consequences of a nose-to-tail collision.

Among the more indulgent options available are comfort seats with heating, cooling and massaging functions, acoustic glazing, supple leather trimming for the centre console, a 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with 1,300 watts of power, TV reception and various connectivity upgrades for the MMI system.

Pricing starts at £42,925 OTR.
